Specialists' Courses

Baby-Friendly USA will be requiring training for medical specialists, (anesthesiologists, radiologists pharmacists, dietitians and ancillary staff) for hospitals who are assessed after October 2018. These courses discuss the principles of the Baby-Friendly Initiative and the key information these specialists need while working with breastfeeding families. Each is about one hour long. A Certificate of completion will be generated at the end of the lesson. No CMEs are available for these courses.

Training for Anesthesiologists

Training for Anesthesiologists

This course highlights caring for breastfeeding mothers who use epidural anesthesia or other medications during labor or other surgical procedures. The course examines and covers principles in minimizing the effects on the breastfeeding infant.

Instructor is Sarah Reece-Stremtan MD, pediatric anesthesiologist and pain medicine physician at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Training for Pharmacists

Training for Pharmacists

This specialty course for pharmacists identifies sources of information for medication use and utilizes tools and techniques for evaluating medication use during breastfeeding. Dr. Nice teaches on how to identify adverse effects in children of mothers who are taking medications and identify medications that are usually safe to take while breastfeeding.

Instructor is Frank Nice RPH DPA CPHP. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy, a Masters Degree in Pharmacy Administration, and Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Public Administration. Dr. Nice holds Certification in Public Health Pharmacy and served 20 years at the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Neurosciences Program as Assistant Program Director.

Training for Dietitians

Training for Dietitians

This course delineates the role of a Registered Dietitian in breastfeeding support in a Baby Friendly Facility. The RD is a key player on the team that supports the process of implementing the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding. This course addresses the commonly asked questions by new mothers regarding foods to eat or not eat during lactation.

Training for Radiologists

This course for Radiologists and Radiology Technicians describes American College of Radiology, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and International Committee for Radiological Protection standards for imaging studies in lactating women. Additionally, it discusses which imaging studies are appropriate for breast specific concerns in lactating women. We briefly cover breast cancer screening during lactation.

Instructors are Katrina B. Mitchell MD and Jamie Giesbrandt MD.

Provides an overview of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and the hospital-wide teamwork necessary to obtain the accreditation. Course describes the benefits of breastfeeding to parents, babies, and the community. It includes a summary of the health care organizations and government agencies which support this initiative to improve the public health and well-being of the country. This course issues a certificate upon completion.
