Whole Hospital Orientation to the Baby Friendly Initiative

Available free for use is a 25 minute movie "Becoming Baby Friendly" that will be useful in informing your whole institution of your activities to achieve designation.

Also available free is a PowerPoint presentation with an overview of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative which may be used to narrate your own presentation.

Please note that continuing education credits are not available for this presentation.


Training for Prenatal Clinic Staff

Training for Prenatal Clinic Staff

One hour online lesson geared toward Prenatal Clinic staff.

Course includes:

  • Breastfeeding trends
  • Explanation of the 10 Steps
  • Positioning and latch-on
  • Benefits of breastfeeding
  • Feeding frequency and duration
  • Preventing breastfeeding problems at home

At course completion, a certificate of completion is automatically generated and continuing education credits are granted.

  • 1 Nursing Contact Hour, 1 L-CERP for IBCLCs and 1 CPEU for dietitians

Training for Ancillary Staff

3 hour online lesson designed for organizations where Nursing Techs, Nursing Assistants or other unlicensed personnel who are providing bedside care to breastfeeding mothers.

Course includes:

  • Introduction to BFHI and the 10 Steps
  • Starting Out Successfully and overcoming breastfeeding difficulties
  • Breast pumps and breastmilk storage

At course completion, a certificate of completion is automatically generated and continuing education credits are granted

  • 1 Nursing Contact Hour, 1 L-CERP for IBCLCs and 1 CPEU for dietitians

$25 each staff member (Groups of 2-9 $20 each, 10-49 $15 each)

Training for Public Health Nurses, Pediatric Nurses, and other outpatient personnel

This training is optional under BFHI guidelines and builds upon the 15 hour general health personnel training.

This course includes 5 hours of outpatient specific training addressing long term breastfeeding issues.

Military Module

Military Module

Robyn Roche-Paull, author of Breastfeeding in Combat Boots, has recorded a special 1 hour segment specifically for military personnel. This is added to the program for military installations at no extra charge.


Training for NICU Staff

Course includes:

  • 15 hours of online lessons:
    • Each lesson is 15 to 30 minutes in length
      • Easily completed in short periods of down time
  • 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding
  • Resources to successfully put new knowledge into practice:
    • Skills evaluation before and after completion
    • Marketing in the workplace worksheet
    • Resources worksheet
    • Pocket Cards
    • And More!

Course requires one of the following:

  • Option I: Student accompanies the staff lactation consultant or other designated breastfeeding specialist on unit rounds and assists with the care of breastfeeding mothers. A check list of required activities is available in Supervisor Resources.
  • or
  • Option II: Skills Day. Expo with stations to practice all of the hands on skills and discuss challenging policies. Skill station instructor talking points are available in Supervisor Resources.
